2003-SB123 Training

Cognitive Behavioral Tools Certification

Cognitive-behavioral Tools Certification Training is a four-day training, based on the National Institute of Correction's Thinking for a Change training. Thinking for a Change was developed by Jack Bush, Barry Glick and Julianna Taymans and has been modified specific to the senate bill and implementation issues by Kansas Department of Corrections. Participants will be required to demonstrate group facilitation in the areas of Cognitive Restructuring, Cognitive Social Skills and Problem Solving during training.

Because only AAPS-certified counselors are eligible to be 2003-SB123 counselors, only AAPS-certified counselors are eligible for spaces in the training. Counselor Assistants may send registrations but will be placed on the training rosters ONLY if spaces are available. Notification of space availability in this circumstance would take place one week in advance.

To apply for a training session please fill out the registration form completely and mail the form with a current copy of your AAPS certification to KDOC, Attn: Staff Skills Development - Programs Division, 900 SW Jackson St. Topeka, KS 66612 or fax the forms to KDOC, Attn: Staff Skills Development - Programs Division, at (785) 296-0304. You may attach the completed form with an electronic copy of your AAPS certificate to an e-mail and send them to SB123@kdoc.dc.state.ks.us if you prefer.

Agencies are limited to two slots per session on a first-come, first-served basis. Training fills up very quickly. Two slots are NOT guaranteed to your agency, even if your agency submits registration forms. Registration confirmation letters are sent 30 days prior to training dates.

Counselors registering for classes that are full will be assigned to their next available choice and placed on a waiting list for their first choice. Please submit your application as early as possible.

Training participants MUST bring their own Thinking for a Change manual. The manual can be downloaded from www.nicic.org/Library/016672. This is a large document and may take several minutes to download. Participants may also request a copy of the manual from National Institute of Corrections by requesting Thinking for a Change Integrated Cognitive Behavior Change Program [The Lessons]. Participants DO NOT need the Facilitator Training Curriculum.
