33rd Annual Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial to Honor Topeka Corporal Jason Harwood

A candlelight vigil will begin in the first floor rotunda of the Kansas statehouse at 8 p.m., Thursday, May 7, 2015. The memorial ceremony and wreath laying ceremony will begin in the second floor rotunda of the Kansas statehouse at noon, Friday, May 8, 2015.

Topeka police Cpl. Jason Harwood

Topeka Police Department Corporal Jason E. Harwood's name will be added to the Kansas Law Enforcement Monument for the ceremony. Corporal Harwood gave his life in the line of duty on September, 7, 2014. While conducting a car stop, one of the vehicles occupants drew a weapon and fired several times at Corporal Harwood who was fatally wounded.

Corporal Harwood joined the Topeka Police Department in June 1999. Promoted to the rank of corporal in May 2012, he served in the hit-and-run unit and the K-9 unit. During his career, Corporal Harwood earned a letter of commendation, a distinguished service bar and two department challenge coins. He is survived by his wife and two sons. He was 40 years old at the time of his death.
