That’s what students in the Kansas Correctional Industries’ Dental Lab at the Topeka Correctional Facility (TCF) do roughly 2,000 times each year during the spare minutes that intersperse their regular work of making dentures for patients of the KAMU safety net clinics scattered across Kansas.

Oral Health Kansas, a group dedicated to improving oral health in Kansas through advocacy, public awareness and education, has presented its Outstanding Oral Health Volunteer Award for 2013 to the students and the administrative specialist, Kathy Heerwald, of the Kansas Correctional Industries Dental Lab at the Topeka Correctional Facility.

Tom Vohs, deputy director of Kansas Correctional Industries (KCI) in Lansing, was named the winner of the National Correctional Industries Association (NCIA) staff award for the South Central Region and is a finalist for a national award which will be announced in April.
