With the guidance of business consultants specializing in food system planning and sustainable food business development, NCF wrote for and was awarded a federal food grant, and today, they are spearheading a charge to upgrade and convert our gardens into local food hubs that would not only provide fresh produce for residents and staff at each facility, but also enough to share with surrounding communities, especially hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. NCF is piloting this project using the food grant to help build a processing plant adjacent to its garden. The plan is to have the plant under the workings of the Kansas Corrections Industries and Rich O’Donnell, who also happens to have experience at the federal prison in Leavenworth converting gardens into food hubs. Many of the graduates received a combination of these degrees and certificates. The 2024 Learning Celebration at Ellsworth Correctional Facility saw 128 recipients of either Associate's Degree, 18 and 32 Hour Completion toward an associate's degree, Kansas State High School or GED Diploma, Welding Certificate, or the OSHA 10 Safety Course certificate. Many of the graduates received a combination of these degrees and certificates. A lot of hard work by the graduates. And a lot of work by Barton Community College and ECF staff to help the students achieve this milestone toward a better and more secure future. Our congrats to all!

In an effort to combat and recover from domestic violence, the administration and staff at TCF, fully supported a group of residents who organized a day-long conference filled with expert speakers and supporting agencies, aimed at breaking free from past experiences while building forward with knowledge and support. The conference was called, "Building From The Bricks Up". An unprecedented day took place at the Topeka Correctional Facility earlier this month. In an effort to combat and recover from domestic violence, the administration and staff at TCF, fully supported a group of residents who organized a day-long conference filled with expert speakers and supporting agencies, aimed at breaking free from past experiences while building forward with knowledge and support. The conference was called, "Building From The Bricks Up". The residents held fundraisers and generated enough money to hold the conference as well as have enough over to make a $1000 donation to a supporting agency. Great work, TEAM TCF!

Phase 2 of that plan included vaccinations for KDOC staff and residents. KDOC receives a weekly allotment of vaccine from KDHE and KDOC medical contractors administer the vaccinations. This information will be posted on our public website by close of business each Wednesday.

One of the biggest names in Contemporary Christian music, Brandon Heath, took to the stage on the yard of Lansing Correctional Facility in partnership with a local radio station. Heath performed 3 separate sets of his songs as the population was staggered for safety and security. Private donations to the radio station also provided a meal, board games, and Bibles for the men. The event was co-sponsored by Brothers in the Blue Reentry program.
