In association with Colby Community College, 33 residents at Norton Correctional Facility donned caps and gowns after completing courses for associate's degrees in Alternative Energy, certificates of completion in Wind Technical or Wind Certificate of Completion, certificates in Telecommunications, and diplomas for completing GED. Congratulations to all our graduates! Two newly created awards were also presented; The Catalyst - to the student exhibiting leadership that inspires others and The Pinnacle - to the student who achieves the highest standards in academia throughout the program. Exciting day for all!

And from getting locked up, to breaking the chains of shame and distrust, Monica Pyles shares her faith journey in hopes of helping others know the healing power of Jesus Christ. She is using her story to help build the womens ministry at the Topeka Correctional Facility, a place in which she was incarcerated for 7 1/2 years.

KDOC's Vision is to change lives for the safety of all. Those who are willing to change, will seize every opportunity afforded to them. Such is the case of former Topeka Correctional Facility resident Monica Pyles. After 3 years of struggling and declining the help from staff within TCF, she admits a breakthrough opened her eyes and set her sights on working at a coveted Private Industries job. The company started in August of 2021 at TCF and Pyles was one of the first 13 ladies hired to make parts of the products with a sewing machine. The company was so pleased with her work and leadership, they hired her straight out of prison when she was paroled in September 2022. She is considered by many as a posterchild for reentry within TCF.

We have determined that changes in management will be beneficial to the agency and to the incumbents currently assigned as Wardens.

Effective immediately the following changes in facility management will be implemented:

Paul Snyder, currently Warden at El Dorado Correctional Facility, has been appointed as Warden of the Winfield Correctional Facility / Wichita Work Release Facility;
Sam Cline, currently Warden at the Lansing Correctional Facility, has been appointed as Warden of the El Dorado Correctional Facility
Ron Baker, currently Deputy Warden at the Lansing Correctional Facility has been appointed the Warden at Lansing.

All of the staff members have long histories in management of correctional facilities, and I am confident that these changes will result in a stronger correctional management team.

Please take a moment to congratulate the Wardens on their new appointments.

Mentoring4Success (M4S)

Mentoring Adult Offenders in Kansas

Mentoring is a key component to reduce recidivism in Kansas.

This community-based statewide initiative delivers mentoring services to help offenders safely and successfully return to communities. Nearly 4,700 offenders leave prison each year and many need help finding employment/housing, getting connected to services/treatment and reuniting safely with neighborhoods/families. Mentors support the work of correctional case workers and service/treatment providers by assisting offenders in reaching their reentry plan goals. Mentors are also instrumental in helping offenders establish a life of pro-social activities and meaningful engagement within their communities.

Our goal is to ensure that every offender leaving prison has the opportunity to work with a mentor. Guided by community service organizations working closely with the Department of Corrections, mentors are trained and matched to offenders six to 12 months prior to an offender's release from prison. Services are also continually monitored and evaluated to ensure the most effective mentoring practices are used.

MEMORANDUM: Message from the Secretary of Corrections to Staff Regarding FY 2009 Budget (January 27, 2009)

A budget proposal passed out of the Senate Ways and Means Committee on Monday, January 26, 2009, provides for a 3.4% across the board budget reduction for state agencies. For the Department of Corrections this reduction would be in addition to reductions previously submitted by the department, including the suspension of operations at Osawatomie and Toronto in February and Stockton in June. A 3.4% reduction for the department is approximately $9.3 million.
