The Juvenile Corrections Officer I is responsible for supervising residents in living units, shower rooms, recreation areas, during visitations and while on transfers to activities, dining room, or other facility functions in order to maintain security, safety, sanitation and good order of the facility.

Juvenile Corrections Officers Qualifications: 

• Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• Must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be free of felony conviction or adjudication, whether or not expunged.
• Must be free of conviction or adjudication by a court of law or court-martial, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year (whether or not the sentence was imposed).
• Must be free of conviction as an adult of Driving Under the Influence (or comparable law regarding driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance) in the past 36 months, as an adult or juvenile.
• Must be free of conviction or adjudication of a misdemeanor involving drug use or possession in the past 60 months.
• Must be free of any pending criminal charges, indictments or outstanding warrants.
• Must meet the minimum qualifications for the Juvenile Corrections Officer I classification (See "Minimum Qualifications" below).
• Must be able to perform the essential/event-driven essential functions of this position.
• Subject to an employment and criminal background check (including, but not limited to, a KBI and NCIC criminal background check and KDCF Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check).
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• After a conditional offer of employment, must take and pass a physical agility test, physical exam, drug test and TB screen.

Beginning Salary for a Juvenile Corrections Officer I is $23.31/hour or $48,484.80year.
Juvenile Corrections Officers are subject to a six-month probationary period.

• Juvenile Intensive Supervision Probation (JISP) serves youth sentenced by the court to a term of probation and provides: assess the youth's risk and needs, development of a supervision plan to address those needs, engaging the youth and family, assisting the youth and family to access community based services, monitoring the youth's adherence to court ordered probation conditions, and provides updates to the court concerning the youth's supervision
• Case Management (CM) serves youth who are placed in the custody of the Commissioner by the District Court for out of home placement. These youth have similar risk/needs to the JISP population, while being from families found by the court to be currently incapable of addressing the issues preventing a disposition of probation. This program also serves youth directly committed by the court to a juvenile correctional facility. Services provided include: assess the risk/needs of the juvenile and the family circumstances, develop a supervision plan with the family to work towards reunification with the family as soon as it is appropriate, identify an appropriate out of home placement and coordinate with that program to address needs of the youth and family, and work with the family to address service needs of the family in the community to help the family be prepared to support the youth upon return home.

 Biography

• The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the death penalty laws in 40 states, including Kansas, in 1972. After several previous attempts, the 1994 Legislature enacted a death penalty law, which Governor Joan Finney allowed to become law without her signature. The statute took effect on July 1, 1994.
• Kansas statute established the death penalty by lethal injection as a sentencing option for offenders 18 years of age and older who are convicted of capital murder (K.S.A. 21-3439).
• A number of inmates have been convicted of capital murder but sentenced to life in prison (with a minimum term of 25 years to parole eligibility) instead of death.
• Kansas does not have a separate “death row.” Inmates sentenced to death are typically housed in El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF), along with other inmates who are in administrative segregation.
• Inmate Scott Cheever was sentenced to death for the murder of Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels. Inmate Cheever is held in the Administrative Segregation Unit at Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) due to the number of friends and family of Sheriff Samuels who are employed at EDCF.
• In the event that a female inmate is sentenced to death, she will be held at the Topeka Correctional Facility (TCF), the only facility for female inmates in Kansas.
• Inmates managed at EDCF or TCF will be transferred to the Lansing Correctional Facility within a week of the scheduled date of the execution.
• The average annual cost of incarceration at the El Dorado Correctional Facility for Fiscal Year 2016 was $25,596.
