East Hill Singers documentary to air on TV following premiere at film fest
Conducting Hope, a documentary film portraying a singing group from Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF), will air on KTWU at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7, 2013, as well as on 60 PBS stations across the country beginning on Nov. 1, 2013.
Celebrating the East Hill Singers, Conducting Hope premiered on October 5, 2013 at the Kansas International Film Festival, held at the Glenwood Arts Theatre in Kansas City. The singing group performed several songs in conjunction with the debut of the film, which was attended by about 250 viewers.
The East Hill Singers is comprised of inmates from the East Unit at LCF and volunteer singers from the greater Kanas City community. The choir is an on-going program presented by Arts in Prison and is in its 19th season.
The film is the culmination of 5 years of work by Westport Productions and Arts in Prison supported by the administration at LCF. It explores the question on how programs like the East Hill Singers can contribute to decreasing the alarming rate of recidivism in the United States.
