Former Lansing Correctional Facility Resident, Aaron Smallwood, cites education and his faith as keys to his path toward redemption. He was released September 6, 2024 after serving 28 years in KDOC custody. During his incarceration, he earned a college degree from Donnelly College and became a mainstay with the Brothers In Blue Reentry program. Since his release, he has a fulltime job at Zephyr Products, a Private Industry partner with KDOC. Smallwood was invited to speak at the University of Kansas School of Education & Human Sciences Black History Month Celebration. He has written two books and told an audience of mostly KU Education students, faculty, and other supporters, that successful reentry is a slow process.

Individuals as young as ten years of age and as old as 17 years of age may be adjudicated as juvenile offenders. State law allows the KDOC to retain custody of a juvenile offender until the age of 22 ½ in a juvenile correctional facility and the age of 23 in the community.

Students enrolled in Washburn University programs at the Topeka Correctional Facility are making historic and remarkable achievements! • 91 students were enrolled in associate and bachelor’s degree programs this past fall. • 54 of those students qualified for academic honors. • This means 59% of the TCF student body earned a place on either the President’s List (4.0 GPA) or the Dean’s List (3.4-3.99 GPA). 🎉 Four students became the first to have graduated with their bachelor's degree at TCF! This level of academic success is a testament to their perseverance and the support provided by the staff at TCF. Our congratulations to them on their outstanding performance and to the staff and administrators that helped make it possible.
