by KDOC News — last modified May 11, 2018 10:54 AM
The Kansas Department of Corrections sends it condolences to the families of Gerald Baxter of Clay Center and Carla Rene Polson of Blue Rapids who were killed in a vehicle accident while en route to serve as volunteers at Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) Friday.

Baxter, Polson and four other members of the Clay Center Wesleyan Church were transporting Christmas gifts as part of their monthly volunteer ministry at LCF.

“KDOC benefits from thousands of volunteers and mentors who give of their time and resources to help the offenders in our custody,” Sec. Joe Norwood said. “They are invaluable to the mission of the agency.

“We are deeply saddened at the passing of two people who were so giving to the men of LCF. Their loss will be felt by those at the facility, as it will be in their church, communities and families.”

The four others in the accident were treated at a Topeka hospital. Norwood wished them a speedy recovery and thanked them for their service.
