New classification guidelines handed down by the National Institute of Corrections are changing the way incarcerated residents in Kansas are doing their time. A resident's gradual integration back into society depends on behavior and programming as they step down in custody levels which determines their risk.
KDOC Classification staff members have worked tirelessly this past summer as they help implement the new guidelines for custody.

Working out of the Hutchinson Parole office, Matt Nelson epitomizes the compassion and care it takes for parole officers as they help their clients through critical junctures coming out of incarceration. He is an Unsung Hero of KDOC.

19 graduates received their diplomas from Lawrence Gardner High School and 16 students received certifications through Washburn Institute of Technology. All were inspired by guest speaker, Jermaine Wilson, who encouraged the graduates to see themselves as a success and to never give up.

71 Residents of Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility walk through commencement exercises to receive either diplomas, program certificates, and/or scholarships. The event is the first since COVID shut down such ceremonies at the Central Kansas prison in 2019.

There are eight adult facilities and one juvenile facility that are maintained 24/7 by Unsung Heroes of KDOC who keep equipment, plumbing, electrical, structural, and roads all in working order. This profile highlights the Maintenance teams at Ellsworth (all male) and Topeka (all female) correctional facilities.
